Our Country's Financial Crisis: My Views

Why do my friends ask me about the current financial meltdown of the US economy? I don’t know but there certainly are a lot of them. I get calls, emails, and other such entreaties for my opinion.

First, the quick answer: is it’s the fault of the current administration. That is the failed economic policies of the Bush administration have caused this collapse. I could walk away and you’ll have an answer that was relatively accurate but devoid of any useful insight. Though, I will admit pretty much everything that’s wrong with the world today could, theoretically, be blamed on Bush. But I’ve got plenty of other commentary on that so we’ll just skip over it.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac needed to be bailed out. They are too heavily involved with the finances of too many of the homeowners in this country. If a buyer cannot be found Washington Mutual, it too must be bailed out. Washington Mutual is no longer an issue as JP Morgan/Chase bought it last night in a deal brokered by the FDIC after they seized WaMu. The consumers of this country do need to be protected from these things. They can neither control them nor influence their outcomes and the average consumer can’t have any reasonable expectation of seeing disaster coming.

Merrill Lynch? It’s a good thing they found a buyer. They should have been allowed to fail otherwise. I don’t think they would have failed, though. Lehman Brothers? Allow them to fail. Hell, Lehman Brothers caters primarily to other financial institutions like banks and such, the rest being to large corporations. I’m not sure anyone with less than seven figures in assets is even welcomed there. I have no idea, though, so don’t take it as gospel.

The bottom line is that the failure of Lehman, Merrill, and soon Goldman Sachs, has nothing to do with the real-estate market. It has everything to do with corporate greed and irresponsibility. Why should OUR tax dollars be used to bail them out? I don’t favour local governments spending hundreds of million to build stadiums for billions sports team owners. So why, then, would I favour spending nearly ONE TRILLION dollars to bail out private companies? Let them fail. Let the bondholders and stockholders take their losses. The stock market is no different than a casino. It’s a gamble. Let it be a hard lesson. Don’t let them use money that should be spent on education, healthcare, and IMPORTANT issues be spent on a PRIVATE COMPANY.

These companies loaned money to corporations that had no business being approved. The system is flawed. The officer at the low end gets a kickback for every loan approved. So does his manager. There’s no incentive to say “no” unless it’s horrifically bad. This system comes with a price, and this is that price. Let them pay it – don’t shove it upon the taxpayers of this country.

Do I favour helping the homeowners who are in loans they can’t afford? Hell no. If you think you can get a $500,000 home for $699 a month forever, you’re an idiot. Let’s do the math. Same math you learned in elementary school:

You have a thirty (30) year mortgage (360 months) and you put down 5% ($25,000). We’ll assume the loan has ZERO interest to make the maths VERY simple. Of course, even the village idiot knows a loan has some interest in it.

$500,000 price
-$25,000 deposit
-$251,640 payments made (360 months x $699)
-------
$223,360 balance due

Now, Mister Homeowner, if you add up everything you paid, and the balance isn’t zero, you still owe money on the house. Exactly whom do you expect to pay that money? I’ll clue you in. It’s you: it’s your house.

So many people can’t handle this math. And this is simple math. I’m assuming the loan is interest free, and it isn’t. Sometime over the course of the loan, the cost of the home PLUS INTEREST must be paid in full. For that to happen, even the dimmest bulb in the world can see the payment must change. But people are greedy and think they’re getting something for nothing. Very few people are actually stupid enough to fall for this so that leaves greed. I take pity on those who IQ is below 80 – everyone else, too bad for them.

And the people who loaned them the money? Shysters, the lot. But that’s not illegal as long as they didn’t misrepresent the loan. And say what you want, when you get your loan packet you get the LEGALLY MANDATED FORM explaining everything you have to pay and for how long. It’s not a surprise. If you were dumb enough to sign for it without reading it, well then it’s just an example of Darwinism at work. All ARM (Adjustable Rate) loans and their ilk (interest only loans, principle only loans, and so on), at some point, adjust so they can cover the balance due based on the current rate of interest. At the end of the 30 years, you have to owe zero. That’s how a loan works. It’s called a loan and not a gift.

But the same corrupt system I mentioned before, all those little kickbacks that go up the chain for “goals” helped people who simply should not and would not qualify for a loan to qualify. And now they can’t afford them. It’s created a housing crisis. And it is, obviously, affecting consumer-lending organizations. Which, I must point out, is not what Lehman Brothers is or was.

Someone I know sent me an article by William Isaac, former chairman of FDIC, bemoaning the crises, as does everyone. He had an interesting slant. Isaac says, “The Securities and Exchange Commission and bank regulators must act immediately to suspend the Fair Value Accounting rules, clamp down on abuses by short sellers, and withdraw the Basel II capital rules. These three actions will go a long way toward arresting the carnage in our financial system …. Lots of folks are assigning blame for the underlying problems -- management greed, inept regulation, rating-agency incompetence, unregulated mortgage brokers and too much government emphasis on creating more housing stock …. The biggest culprit is a change in our accounting rules that the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the SEC put into place over the past 15 years: Fair Value Accounting. Fair Value Accounting dictates that financial institutions holding financial instruments available for sale (such as mortgage-backed securities) must mark those assets to market. That sounds reasonable. But what do we do when the already thin market for those assets freezes up and only a handful of transactions occur at extremely depressed prices?

I agree with his hypothesis. I do think this is part of the problem. But it’s only a part. The greed of the system, the incompetence of the people making the loans, and the outright stupidity of the borrowers created that problem. And it had nothing to do with Lehman Brothers.

There is a theory that if the government buys, through the new Resolution Trust, all the negative mortgages that at some point they won't be negative anymore because the housing market always recovered. This may, or may not, come to pass. But there are lots of people who will default nonetheless. It's not going to save your ass if you bought a house you can't afford.

Again, a prime cause of the problem was these high cost loans without adequate equity behind them, loans that no one should have ever approved, and when coupled with the drop in housing prices, people were paying loans on properties they couldn't afford. Of course they couldn't afford them in the first place but greed outweighed common sense as I've repeatedly stated. People always assumed that no matter what, they'd be able to sell the house but you know what happens when you assume....
The reason some people feel we need a bailout is that, without it, credit dries up; we need credit to finance business growth and consumer spending. Without those two things, we will sink into recession. However this presumes we weren't going into a recession anyway. Bring on the recession and let the crap float to the surface so it can be skimmed off. Anyway, that's why the government is planning to buy them. If the economy turns around, and housing prices rise again, which they should eventually, because demand will one day exceed supply (though we're talking years away now), then these depressed assets the government is buying will be worth more than they paid for for them so the US$700,000,000,000 price tag may be slightly mitigated. But it still isn't our government's job to do this. They didn't create this mess.

If this passes, and it will in some form, we are getting a very large telephone pole shoved up our collective asses without the benefit of Vaseline®. And you can thank the incompetence of the Bush administration who let this happen, and now has a harebrained scheme to fix it. Once again, they have no idea that there is any big picture involved. They don’t care about your future. Yes, it really is the fault of this administration, but you need to understand why. They are the facilitators, for sure, enablers in a co-dependent relationship with an institute of greed.

Again, if you want a future where you, your friends, your family, and your children are not beholding to foreign interests who have the assets to buy our problems, vote for Obama. If you vote for McCain, God will not have mercy on you because it is said He only helps those who help themselves. Think.

Disc vs Disk

I am reminded of a long term pet peeve by Spencer F Katt's column in the 22 September 2008 issue of e-week magazine. In writing about technology there is both a Disc and a Disk. They are not interchangeable and they don't mean the same thing. Here's a guide to getting it right.

First, a Disc (with a "C") refers to optical media, such as an audio CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, and so forth. It doesn't matter if the Disc is read only (ROM) or read/write (RAM or RW). All Discs are removable, meaning when you unmount or eject the Disc from your desktop, it physically comes out of your computer unless you have a wonky drive. Except for some specially made CDs, these are always round.

Second a Disk (with a "K") refers to magnetic media, such as a floppy Disk, an internal or external hard Disk drive, or removable media such as Zip Disk or Jazz drives -- and they don't always use the word Disk. This term also applies to the RAM based flash-based Disk drives though this is a misnomer as they are not Disk drives but auxiliary storage devices. All Disk drives are read/write unless locked physically or by software using write-protect. Unmounting a Disk drive doesn't necessarily cause the Disk to eject.

You can partition both types so that is not a valid determining factor. The confusion comes from the fact that a hard Disk drive is made up of magnetic Disc inside the drive that are round. They are called platters and they are Disc. Floppy Disk drives and Zip drives also have round Discs inside them. But a Disk drive doesn't necessarily have Discs inside.

Impress your friends, know the difference, and get it right. Please. Thanks.

Post 501 or a Pair of 501s?

Yeah, this is post 501. I missed the big celebration of 500 :) Life goes on. The blog is at 196,000 hits or thereabouts. I'm going to break 200,000 before the year ends. That's just mind blowing. Most of the visitors are still looking at Led Zeppelin posts and Daniel Radcliffe posts. So if you need a blog topic, those are them. I suppose a Daniel Radcliffe sings Led Zeppelin post would put me over a million.... ::laughs::

Next up, before I get to the interesting stuff, is a word of warning to all users of Norton 360. We use this crapware at work. They've started pushing out notices that a new version is available at no charge with your current subscription. Nothing wrong with the new version that wasn't wrong in the old version: it's bloated, slows your system down, but does the job it claims to do. However there is a horrendous bug in the installation script. If you have any Norton product besides 360, please be advised that as part of the upgrade process it deletes your ENTIRE "Symantec" folder which means all applications installed there are ALL deleted. Without asking. At work we use Procomm on a few PCs (yeah we have a few for practical reason, though are still mostly AIX) to connect to the AIX box. It got nuked. It took me 4 hours to fix it because the new version of Norton doesn't allow any program to install itself if it uses any Symantec DLL's because it views it is a threat. No way around it except to totally and complete un-install Norton. The easy work around is to DUPLICATE your entire Symantec folder and then after the upgrade drag your other applications back in there. I called, argued, and they insist it asks you if it's okay but of course it doesn't.

Now, on to the interesting stuff. Or interesting to someone.

I've decided to divorce a particular friend. No names or genders. I am just tired of repeated bitchy replies to e-mails, the constant droning on-and-on-and-on about the same few topics. I don't hate the person but I just don't need the attitude. I'll just ignore the person's emails, stop sending them any of my own, and they'll slowly get the hint and go away. I don't think said person reads my blog so I don't think they'll recognize themselves here. Is this the best way to divorce a friend? I think it would be easier on them if I said something. I think they're so self-centered they might not even notice so much.

I went to the doctor yesterday. That was an ordeal. I had a 3pm appointment, I called at 200 to make sure they were on time -- as this doctor is famous for being behind. They said only a few minutes. I got there around 240pm. I didn't see the doctor until 515pm. When I left at 550pm, there were still patients waiting. The last appointment of the day is at 330pm. I said something when they brought me in but it didn't even get me an apology. I hate that. Only one more appointment with this doctor, and I will say something after that. (I made my appointment early in the AM so he can get behind with someone else.) As for the news, there has been no progress. None. There is no surgery in the future (said doctor happens to be a surgeon) and he feels there is a very real possibility I will not get better. Ever. He recommends continued treatment by my chiropractor. I have been collecting names of attorneys and will be hiring one within the next 30 to 60 days. Progressive -- the Evil Insurance Company From Hell -- really needs to learn that if its drivers are at fault they need to stop treating the victim like a criminal and lying and being generally assholeish. (New Word!)

Lastly, I watched the season premier of Heroes last night. What a disappointment. Really. I wanted to like it so badly. But they haven't learned. They're delving deeper into the time travel shit. Did they forget how much everyone hated Hiro's trip in time last season? Well now it's so messed up, it's hard to keep track of. I think it's about done for me. Sad but true. There was even a spectacular continuity gaffe: last season Hiro's dad gave his company to his daughter because Hiro wanted to be a hero and not a CEO. Now, guess who's the CEO with the daughter forgotten? Hiro. And it's in the present so it's not another time travel screw up -- of which they had plenty. Blech. I'll give it a few more episodes, but I think there may be a shark sighting any day.

Je Detest Le Dentiste et les chausettes humides

Oh, how I dislike going to the dentist. I've been putting it off for weeks. Finally, at work today, it was too much. I called the dentist's office and asked when they could see me. "Right now" or on Tuesday. I asked exactly when "right now" was and they meant RIGHT NOW. So I jumped in my car and went.

It's tooth number 14 (the one I've always had problems with since it was butchered when I was a kid in high school). He removed the filling currently in place -- it's been removed nearly six times -- to see what was wrong but other than a tiny amount of decay, which he insisted couldn't be causing it he suggested we give it a root canal and a crown to fix it for good.

I politely declined saying I'd like to try the filling one more time and he obliged. This wasn't my regular dentist but the other dentist in his office (who I may even like more) and he started in on me. But I stopped him after about halfway and demanded more Novocaine. A little over an hour later, I have a new filling. He said I'd probably call him next week begging for a root canal, and right now I probably agree with that assessment but I hate those things and am doing whatever I can to avoid it.

My tooth hurts, I have a pounding headache because of the tooth, and to make it worse I am waiting for the plumber to correct a "toilet emergency" and I will spare you the details except to say "flush" and then "wet socks."

Liz (Mrs. Johnny B) has a nice photo of me on her Flickr blog from my group birthday outing to the Hard Rock. I'll share it when I get it.

A busy blog post today: Politics, Promotions, Gay Marriage

COMPANY VIDEO
First, I've posted a short video of Interstate. It's not a commercial but a promotional video. The real difference is a commercial is trying to sell you something. We're just telling you a bit about us. This was shot by a private contractor working for BellSouth/AT&T to attach to our Internet ads for next year. So starting 11-1 when you visit our online ad at the Yellow Pages you're supposed to get this video. The online quality is a bit low but it's cool.

Giving it a high rating would be appreciated if you view it on YouTube.

GAY TREK
Secondly, congratulations to George Takei and Brad Altman who got married today in California where gay couples can now legally wed. A Scottish bagpiper led Takei, 71, and Altman, 54, to the reception on the grounds of the Japanese American National Museum. On the way, the couple, along with their maid of honour and best man (Takei's former "Star Trek" co-stars Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig) flashed the "live long and prosper" hand sign to photographers and friends.

Live Long And Prosper. Indeed! Congratulations, Sulu! Make it so! Engage! Etcetera. Exactly why are people opposed to this? What a happy couple.

STUPID BUSH ECONOMICS
And who is to blame for this mess that is our economy? I'd like to tell you it's the Republicans, but mostly it's the American Public who lets greed and empty promises overrule common sense. Yeah, basically it's your fault. And you know who you are.

People bought $500,000 houses and didn't think to question how it was just $799 a month* and wondered when their payments ballooned to $3500? It just means you're an idiot. That's nobody's fault but yours. There are tons of cases like this and 99% of them are the fault of the borrower who thought it made sense and the lenders who fought each other to make high risk loans. Let it all fall out. And it's starting. Lehman Brothers, bankrupt. Merrill Lynch, sold. Washington Mutual is about to be another casualty by many accounts. And of course let's not forget Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. The government finally has decided to stop bailing everyone out, and it's about damn time.

Certainly this specific administration which has its eyes on the wrong goals is at fault for allowing our dollar to become devalued against most major currencies. The C$ moved to par before settling back to $0.92 from $0.56 and the £ went to over $2.04 before settling back to $1.75 from $1.48. That's a crushing imbalance, all other things being equal.

All that is the fault of a myopic administration. But the destruction of Lehman Brothers? Not their fault.

ROBBER OIL BARONS
The price of oil has raised the cost of everything owing to the spectacular failure of the Bush administration's energy policies -- and make no mistake this is their single biggest error: selling our country's soul to foreign interests in even bigger ways than before. The Saudis are NOT our friends and they OWN us. They're using our money to buy our country.

The price of oil has plummeted 5% in one day -- as of 2pm today, so it may have adjusted -- on weaker economic news plus reports that Ike wasn't what they expected (no offense, Texas, but you got off easy). Oil is expected to close below $100 for the first time since early March.

However gas at the pump remains nearly 70 cents a gallon higher than that same week. So who's getting the extra 70 cents a gallon? EXACTLY. Check doe.gov if you don't believe this.

SUMMARY
And of course every one of you is earning LESS in real dollars than you were four years ago. The fact that the market dropped 500 points is a bit much.

In the Washington Post, David Ignatius (A McCain fan) writes: McCain made the most important command decision of his life when he chose Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee. Two weeks later, it is still puzzling that he selected a person who, for all her admirable qualities, is not prepared by experience or interest to be commander in chief.

Because of Palin's dynamism and political appeal, she's being hailed as an "inspired choice," to use President Bush's words. And she certainly has energized the Republican ticket: The polls show it, as do the enthusiastic crowds. And if a politician's primary responsibility is to get elected, this may indeed have been a sublime choice. But was it the right one? And what does it tell us about McCain?"

One party is talking about the economy and fixing it. One of them is talking about gay marriage. Which is a bigger threat to our nation? Our dependence on oil and the failed economic policies of a myopic administration interested only in preserving the money in its pockets? Or perhaps Gay Marriage.

That being said, if you're still voting for McCain and Palin (from an Oil State) in this election, you're deluded. The president is supposed to represent our nation as a whole and do what's best for us as a group (whether or not we agree). Ronald Reagan -- whom I am not a fan of -- was the last Republican to manage that. McCain is not Ronald Reagan by anyone's measure.

And to end on a fun note, with thanks to Maury, here's a great Barack Obama set to the tune of Les Miserables:

*Math: 799 x 12 months x 30 years = $287,640 without interest. Did you think the bank was giving you the rest of the money and not charging you interest? That is VERY simple math. If you can't handle that, go move in with your parents. I have no sympathy for you.

My New Mobile Phone

Yay. Today was a big day in Mobile Phone Land when I got a little pissed with T-Mobile (okay, I got a lot pissed) very recently. Nothing frosts my balls more than people who don't return calls.

I have been a loyal T-Mobile customer since the Jamie Lee Curtis days. Yeah, okay, so maybe she's the one that made me notice their company. Just shut up. Anyway, between the failed return call and the bad experience with their customer service (corporate not personal), I made a decision.

Our company is switching from T-Mobile to AT&T. I need GSM so those are my only two real choices here in the USA and I'd much prefer T-Mobile. But a principle is a principle, so we've started switching our phones over. Four down, two more tomorrow, and the rest a few days thereafter.

As part of that, I bought a new phone. And it's not an iPhone and it's certainly not a Windows Mobile phone. Many of you thought I was secretly plotting for an iPhone and though I considered it, I'm just not a fan. My main requirement for a phone is that it's a phone and possibly a camera and a customized ring tone. I don't need much in a phone. The rest is fluff.

I now have a Motorola Razr2 v9. Yay. I am pleased to report I got a hack for iSync to talk to it via Bluetooth as I have no cables and was able to easily log on and put files on the phone. My contacts are loaded. Tomorrow I have to see if it'll play nice with my car, though I am skeptical.

As such, I spent most of this evening hacking into it and uploading my custom ringtone, desktop/wallpaper, and so forth. It's amazing how difficult the carriers make this since they, of course, want you to buy them. Fie! An MP3 must be 300k or less and under 128bits and 30seconds to qualify as valid ringtone file on an AT&T phone, but it was easy to do. A program named Switch (Mac only) made the editing and scaling down of my audio easy.

The wallpaper size is 240 x 320 and once I figured that out, I was able to upload a temporary until I decide what I want. (Free tip: go to the paid websites where they charge you for wallpapers, view their sample image and figure out the file size for your phone, and then make your own with whatever you find on Google Images.)

I can call out but no inbound calls yet. They still go to my T-Mobile number. Oddly I can call out on both numbers which is theoretically impossible. But it works. And I can send SMS from either. One hopes tomorrow this is fixed.

This phone is a lot more complicated to use, but I'll figure it out eventually. I even got the 24hr clock to work by outsmarting their stupid override feature.

I have a T-Mobile (locked) v330i Motorola for anyone who wants one. Free to good home. SIM and Service not included.

People Suck

I learned a lesson today. Trust nobody. Ever. No matter what. Nobody has your best interests at heart except you. Even the people you think when push comes to shove you can trust, not even them. They're waiting there with a knife, to plant it in your back.

And some people wonder why I want to move to another country where I'll know nobody. Because it won't matter. I'm just tired of this. Tired, tired, tired. As soon as I can get out of this, I'm going to move away. No forwarding address, nothing. Tomorrow, the planning starts in earnest.

Pineapple Express (and various other items)

We saw Pineapple Express today. If you see any film with the word Pineapple in the title, make it this one. A fast check of IMDB reveals this is the only one. So much for that plan. It was funny -- definitely a better film than Tropic Thunder (see previous blog post). I laughed most of the way through it, though the last 3-1/2 minutes didn't need to be in the film and it would have been much better since they were an awkward and unfunny 3-1/2 minutes.

Another Judd Apatow and Seth Rogan film with Seth in the lead, but James Franco steals the show. It's a stoner film cast in the mode of the early Cheech and Chong flicks such as Up In Smoke and is a worthy addition to that particular oeuvre. If you can appreciate that sort of humour, this film's for you. Full of drug humour, foul language, yet surprisingly no sex to speak of, though references of course abound. Lots of classic "icky" moments like when we find out Rogan's girlfriend is still in high school. The squeamish factor is high and that makes it extra enjoyable. Really.

I have written letters to all concerned doctors about the mess with Progressive and explained that State Farm has stopped paying. I've let them know they should bill Progressive though they may not be paid for awhile. I'm also going to be filing another complaint with the State of Florida Department of Insurance against Progressive. They clearly have no intention of paying or handling this in a fair and equitable manner. They continue to treat me like I'm stupid. Within the next two weeks, there will be legal counsel involved. Then they will have to pay my medical bills and attorney's bills. I cannot tell you how sucky Progressive is. I hope and pray you never get in accident with any of their insured because you will never get paid and they will treat you like a criminal and an idiot.
